Stop the Attack on Libya. NOW.
Stop the Attack on Libya! NOW!

Britain and the US have bombed Libya with more than one hundred Tomahawk cruise missiles, supported with air attacks by France and other big powers. These are not precision guided weapons but will create many civilian casualties in Libya, of which reports are just beginning to emerge.

The United Nations resolution authorising a no-fly zone – the first stage of a “multi-phase operation” – begins as it will continue, with a full-scale military attack on the country. This is very likely to lead to another protracted war.

Oxford Stop the War Coalition condemns this attack on a sovereign country that has no basis in international law and stands against the pro-war consensus at Westminster, where it was not even considered necessary to hold a vote before taking military action.

Under the banner of “protecting civilians”, the US, Britain and the other big European powers are pursuing their own self interests to control Libya’s political power and oil. It is clear that regime change is once again the aim of these powers, taking sides in a civil war so as to put in place a power more to their liking. We know only too well the death and destruction that such intervention has brought to the peoples of Iraq and elsewhere in the region.

Hands off Libya!
