Events to mark May Day 2011
Across the country, trade unionists will be commemorating 1st May, International Workers' Day, with marches, rallies and events. Here are a number of events being organised by trades councils and local union groups, taking place in the days around May Day.

South West
•Yeovil Mayday Celebrations
29th April, 7pm. Yeovil Labour Club. Tickets ý6 adv. / ý8 on door.
The Skimmity Hitchers, Thomas and the Mocks Ups and DJ Dappa Dan joining forces to put on a night to remember. The event will not only celebrate May Day, but raise funds for campaigns across the area that support public services and oppose the damaging cuts that all people across the region face at the moment. •Plymouth Mayday Festival
30th April, 11am until 6.00pm. Plymouth Guildhall, Armada Way

•Dorchester May Day Festival1st May. Borough Gardens, Dorchester
A family event, with music, refreshments and stalls (entrance fee a donation towards costs), but also a serious day, promoting trade union membership and resistance to the cuts. E-mail t.nicholls826@btinternet.com if you want to take part or bring a stall.
•Exeter March for the Alternative
2nd May, 11am.
Assemble at Exeter Odeon for 11am and march to a Rally in Belmont Pleasure Ground www.exeteranticutsalliance.org.uk
Midlands
•Derby Silk March and Rally
30th April, 10.30am. Assembly Rooms, Market Place, Derby
The march will go to the Silk Mill for the laying of the chaplet commemorating the struggle of the workers there in 1834 and will then continue back to the Market Place for speeches and entertainment
•Chesterfield May Day Presentation
2nd May. New Square Chesterfield
South East and Eastern
•Croydon May Day march and celebration
30th April, 11am. Elmwood Road, West Croydon
To celebrate May Day this year Croydon Trades Union Council will be holding a march through the town centre to Ruskin House where there will be speakers and music from 1pm to support the ongoing local campaign again the cuts to local jobs and services.
•Ipswich May Day Festival
1st May, 11am. Giles Circus, Princes Street, Ipswich
March to Alexandra Park, to fight the cuts, and defend local jobs and services. Free family event, more details at: www.Ipswichmaydayfestival.co.uk
•London May Day march
1st May, 12 noon. Clerkenwell Green, London EC1
March to Trafalgar square for a rally at 1.30pm. www.londonmayday.org
North West
•May Day in Manchester, March for the alternative
1st May, 1pm. All Saints Park, Oxford Rd
Organised by Manchester TUC supported by Manchester Coalition Against Cuts, Greater Manchester Stop the War Coalition, RAPAR, University of Manchester Students' Union, Manchester Metropolitan Students' Union. Including rally against cuts and privatisation, and for the NHS at 2.15pm in Peace Gardens, St Peter's Sq. Followed by food and entertainment for all ages in Friends Meeting House from 3pm
•Merseyside May Day
1st May, 2.30pm.
Merseyside TUC May Day march and rally. March from the Metropolitan (Catholic) Cathedral in Hope Street through Liverpool City Centre for a rally at Derby Square outside the Crown Court.
•Salford May Day Rally
2nd May, 2pm. Bexley Square (Off Chapel Street)
The 80th Anniversary of the 'Battle of Bexley Square' where Salfordians Stood Together against Government attacks on working class people. Salford is currently facing massive cuts in jobs and services. This year's May Day is being marked by Salford Against the Cuts with a rally to celebrate the city and heritage and to stand against cuts to jobs, services and communities.
•Burnley May Day Festival
2nd May, Towneley Park.
The Burnley May Day Festival is held every year on the May Day bank holiday Monday. It has run every year since the bank holiday was established in 1978. It is preceded by a May Day parade that sets off from Burnley Town Hall.
•Lancaster Mayday March and Rally
30th April, 11:45am. Organised by Lancaster and Morecambe Trades Union Council. Meet at Thurnham Street Car Park for march through town. Rally and speakers in Market Square.
Yorkshire and the Humber
•Lecture for May Day
6th May, 6pm. Huddersfield Town Hall, Ramsden Street, HD1 2TA
