Philip Hammond meets Raul Castro in Cuba
Philip Hammond met one of the Castro brothers in Cuba in a historic visit.
Mr Hammond is the first foreign secretary to visit the island nation since the Cuban Revolution.

He spent Friday afternoon with Raul Castro in Havana, in a visit Mr Hammond said was a “sign of warming relations” between the UK and Cuba.
The Foreign Secretary’s visit comes a month after President Obama’s historic visit to Cuba. He was the first American President in 90 years to set foot in the country.

Cooperation in the fields of education, energy, culture and financial services was discussed.

Sources told The Daily Telegraph the meeting was “very warm” and the Cubans were particularly interested in discussing how Britain could assist with their embryonic financial services.

While Britain has never severed diplomatic ties with Cuba, trade remains restrained by American imposed sanctions.
