From June 30 to July 8, Prince William, the grandson of the Queen of England, will impose his presence on the Quebec people, walking in the streets of downtown Montreal and Quebec City, the national capital, with his wife Kate Middleton. They will go, among other places, to the Chateau Frontenac for a ceremony to glorify the British monarchy and give it a "makeover." This visit is a provocation. The Quebec people are firmly opposed to the remnants of British colonialism and the anachronistic arrangements they represent. Quebec is in need of a change of political direction through democratic renewal and the visit of the royal couple only highlights the crisis of the Anglo-Canadian political institutions. Quebec has absolutely no need for representatives of the British monarchy to come here to celebrate their decadent marriage. Quebec needs politics through which the working class can take control of the economic and political affairs so as to resolve the crisis in a way that benefits the people. This requires abolishing the arrangements which make the people subservient to foreign monarchs and the interests of the monopolies they uphold. It requires blocking those who want to deprive the people of their sovereign power. The royal couple invokes what is most vulgar in the current economic and political situation. They represent the remnants of an obsolete past at a time today's problems require modern answers. They are a symbol of the decay of the Anglo-Canadian institutions and of the will of the Anglo-American imperialists to impose their dictate on the peoples. The wedding of these representatives of the monarchy glorified the squandering of public funds under the hoax of security with a cost of close to $130 million. It also glorified decadence with more than $16 million wasted in the celebrations. It is a gross affront to the people to squander so much money, which is a portion of the wealth that workers have produced, at the same time that reactionary governments are demanding the people "tighten their belts" to eliminate deficits and pay for so-called austerity measures. The Quebec people are not fooled by this and they refuse to submit to this grotesque spectacle. They condemn the festivities of the royal wedding where the admirers of fascism celebrated on April 29, the same day that Adolf Hitler married the infamous Eva Braun. These are the reasons why we call on the Quebec media to take the only honourable stand regarding the royal couple's visit to Quebec: SILENCE! We must all reject treating this as a so-called special and official visit when it is a blatant attempt to depoliticize the Quebec people and subjugate them to Anglo-Canadian institutions originating from the British empire. If the British monarchy is a mere symbol without power, as those parties which benefit from these institutions claim, why then are their representatives hosted as if they are our masters? No to the visit of the representatives of the anachronistic feudal institutions! The Quebec people will not submit to the British monarchy! All out for the democratic renewal of the institutions! Let the working class constitute itself the nation and vest sovereignty in the people! (Translated from French original by TML Daily.) |
