Key Facts and FAQ Answers for NUT Representatives Summer Term 2014 The NUT’s Stand Up for Education campaign continues with a one day national strike in England and Wales on 10 July at the same time as strike action by other unions such as Unison, GMB and Unite. We’re asking all members to: •Join your local stand up for education street stalls to leaflet parents and the public - you can find details of your nearest stall on the NUT website at: www.teachers.org.uk •Take part in influencing Parliamentary candidates in every marginal constituency and beyond - to ensure every prospective MP understands the depth of teachers’ concern and presses Michael Gove to settle his disputes with teachers •Continue to support our action short of strike action - which is sending a clear message to Government that attacks on our terms of employment and our professionalism are unacceptable •Prepare for strike action in schools, academies and sixth form colleges across England and Wales on 10 July - to demonstrate to politicians, parents and the public the degree of anger among teachers. Our campaign is beginning to make real progress, but so much more remains to be won. Our strike in 2011 won improvements in funding for pensions – but teachers will still have to pay more and work longer to get less in retirement. Michael Gove’s proposals to de-regulate working conditions were rebuffed - but nothing has changed on existing problems of working time. The imposition of PRP in all teachers will begin to bite in September as teachers lose pay increases they would otherwise have received. Our campaign and day of strike action will demonstrate teachers’ continuing anger about the way they are being treated and the consequences for the education service. NUT representatives are playing a vital role in making the campaign a success. In every school, academy and college, NUT representatives should: •attend any local NUT representative meetings; •contact reps from nearby schools and colleges to discuss how to build for the strike; •organise members’ meetings in your workplace and with other reps and members; •organise members to take part in education street stalls; •continue to organise members to take part in action short of strike action; and •recruit any non members to the NUT.
