Harper hosts British PM in Ottawa next week
British Prime Minister David Cameron will speak to Parliament next week.

He is headed for Ottawa after addressing the annual opening of the United Nations General Assembly next Thursday in New York.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper will also be in New York next week, his office confirmed on Wednesday. It is expected he will be meeting with other NATO leaders concerning the situation in Libya.

Mr. Harper, however, will not be speaking to the Generally Assembly. Instead, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird will deliver Canada’s remarks.

MPs return to the House on Monday after their summer break. The Prime Minister has vowed that his focus will be on the economy and jobs.

This will be the first time Britain’s Conservative Prime Minister has spoken to Parliament. He was in Canada last year for the G8 and G20 Summits, his first international summit after forming government with Nick Clegg’s Liberal Democrats in May, 2010.

Former Labour British Prime Minister Tony Blair spoke to both Canada’s House of Commons and Senate in 2001.
