The government is desperate to go for a vote for military escalation in Syria. It is currently trying to limit opposition in their own ranks. Meanwhile as Newsnight reported on Tuesday, a number of Labour MPs have already pledged to rebel against Corbyn on the issue should he win. More Western bombing in Syria will only inflame the situation and increase the level of bitterness against the West. Intervention may well be dressed up in talk about no-fly zones and safe havens. But the war on Libya shows that no fly zones don't save lives. An estimated 30,000 people died there after the no-fly zones was set up in 2011. They are in fact a prelude to military action. They require assaults on anti-aircraft positions and hostile aircraft. David Cameron has already announced his aim is to destroy Isis AND to remove Assad. Apart from being incoherent, such plans can only mean a commitment to massive military force. The Tories' plans are also aimed at destablising a Corbyn-led Labour Party. Given this new initiative from the Tories, Stop the War is asking all our supporters to lobby their MPs immediately. You can use the lobbying tool here. We should also be prepared for an emergency protest should a vote be announced. ------------------------- Refugees Welcome Here National Day of Action Saturday 12 September Assemble 12 Noon Marble Arch, London Details » Organise events where you live Facebook Event » Join us tomorrow at what promises to be the biggest demonstration in support of refugees for decades. We should stand in solidarity with these desperate people (from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and elsewhere) fleeing insecurity and conflict, the "scorched earth" that is now the Middle East following a decade and a half of US and UK wars and destabilisation. Our support for refugees must include the opposition to the causes of the refugee crisis. We need to remind people that UK bombing of Syria would inevitably lead to many more refugees. Please do everything you can to support this day of solidarity with refugees.
