The postcards warn that the reorganisation will increase spending on bureaucracy and will make profits rather than health the main drivers for providing healthcare.

The campaign also warns the government that its emphasis on choice is ‘completely misplaced’ as the majority of people in the country want an excellent local provider, rather than a multitude of providers that may be ‘far away’.

Local GP and an organiser of the petition Dr Jonathan Tomlinson said the ‘huge response’ to the campaign shows that prime minister David Cameron’s statement that the profession and public is on board with the NHS reforms is ‘completely untrue’.

He said: ‘The vast majority of the profession and patients and the public are very much against the NHS reorganisation. There is only a tiny majority of very powerful GP entrepreneurs who are vocally supportive, but there are only a dozen of them.’

‘We are calling for the government to withdraw the Health and Social Care Bill in its entirety.’
