| Around 60 lecturers and students held a funeral march across Goldsmiths campus today, in protest at the unjust attacks on higehr education workers pension rights. All dressed in black, carrying home made placards and handing out leaflets, the procession became a lively funeral when activists began chanting 'No ifs, no buts, no education cuts', and 'When they say cut back, we say fight back'. The march went from in front of the main entrance through the coffee shop and canteens, the newly built million pound academic building, and finshed at the doorway to the management office. As the procession went about its noisy way, many students cheered and chanted along, the vibrant mood generated obviously unsettled management, because upon arrival, the doors to the management building we locked shut! Eventually, the management agreed to meet, and were handed an invoice for 5 million pounds, which is the amount UCU members at Goldsmiths are collectively set to lose if the pensions changes come into effect. The afternoon was finshed off with UCU members hosting a stall in the main corridors of the building for a further 3 hours. They leafletted students and colleagues explaing what the current wave on industrial action means, and how to get involved in supporthing the pensions fight and other campaigns against HE cuts. |
