The NSSN sends our solidarity and support to the British Gas workers and their union, the GMB after the first action taken against the ‘fire and re-hire’ tactics of Centrica. As the union says, “GMB conducted a strike ballot of 9,000 members in December 2020. An overwhelming 89% voted in favour of industrial action. This vote was after parent company Centrica said it would impose ‘fire and rehire’ cuts to workers’ pay and terms and conditions on pain of dismissal.” We call on all our supporters and the whole trade union movement to continue to build support for the action. If British Gas bosses aren’t prepared to properly engage with the union, the next strike dates will be January 20th and 22nd. Management’s methods show why public utilities such as this need to be brought back into public ownership.
